چکیده

We explore photonic microwave signal generation utilizing the heterogeneous silicon-III/V platform and the benefits and execution of a fully integrated chip. Optimization of device components is discussed, including high-speed waveguide photodiodes and widely tunable lasers. Microwave signal generation is demonstrated beyond 110 GHz. Exploration into dual signal generation with a tracking fixed offset is discussed.

Using Narrow-Linewidth Lasers for Rapidly Tunable Microwave Signal Generators

Narrow-linewidth lasers are a key component of photonic microwave signal generators, as the width of the generated RF signal is equal to the beat note of used lasers. Heterogeneous silicon photonics platform opens up a possibility of improving the coherence of fully integrated photonic microwave generators by providing means to separate the photon resonator and absorbing active medium; improvin...

Heterogeneously integrated III-V/silicon dual-mode distributed feedback laser array for terahertz generation.

We demonstrate an integrated distributed feedback (DFB) laser array as a dual-wavelength source for narrowband terahertz (THz) generation. The laser array is composed of four heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon DFB lasers with different lengths enabling dual-mode lasing tolerant to process variations, bias fluctuations, and ambient temperature variations. By optical heterodyning the two...

Heterogeneously Integrated Distributed Feedback Quantum Cascade Lasers on Silicon

Silicon integration of mid-infrared (MIR) photonic devices promises to enable low-cost, compact sensing and detection capabilities that are compatible with existing silicon photonic and silicon electronic technologies. Heterogeneous integration by bonding III-V wafers to silicon waveguides has been employed previously to build integrated diode lasers for wavelengths from 1310 to 2010 nm. Recent...

Abstract—Narrow linewidth THz generation using a cascaded Brillouin fibre laser structure and a unitraveling carrier

Narrow linewidth THz generation using a cascaded Brillouin fibre laser structure and a unitraveling carrier photodiode is proposed. Using two distributed feedback lasers separated by > 1 THz with 1 MHz initial linewidth, the linewidth of the realized THz source is found to be < 100 Hz at 1014.7 GHz without use of any active stabilization of the laser cavity or any microwave reference.

Fully integrated microwave frequency synthesizer on heterogeneous silicon-III/V.

We demonstrate a photonic microwave generator on the heterogeneous silicon-InP platform. Waveguide photodiodes with a 3 dB bandwidth of 65 GHz and 0.4 A/W responsivity are integrated with lasers that tune over 42 nm with less than 150 kHz linewidth. Microwave signal generation from 1 to 112 GHz is achieved.
